7 DAYS NORTHERN ETHIOPIA HISTORIC ROUTE by Flight (Axum, Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar)

Day 1 - ARRIVAL - ADDIS ABABA
Arrive Addis Ababa Bole International airport where the Gelila Ethiopia Tours staff will be greet you at exit gate and will assist the transfer to the hotel. Depending on your arrival you can do sightseeing of Addis Ababa. 
Visit the National Museum, one of the most important sub-Saharan museums in all of Africa. The museum is home to the fossilized humanoid Lucy, as well as a collection of artifacts, royal items and art. Visit the Ethnological Museum, which was the former palace of Haile Selassie. Take time in St. George Cathedral, built in 1896 by Emperor Menelik and continue on to Holy Trinity Cathedral. Holy Trinity Cathedral is the largest Orthodox Church in Ethiopia and has survived through many historical periods. The Cathedral contains the thrones and the tombs of the emperor, some of the royal family and a past president. Visit Merkato, the largest open air market in Africa. Overnight  HOTEL

Day 2- Fly to Axum and sightseeing
Early morning transfer to the airport for your flight to Axum, the holiest sanctuary, and oldest capital of Ethiopia. After settling into your hotel, depart on a city tour including a visit to the ancient stelae (obelisks) and the national museum - widely rated as Ethiopia's best. In the afternoon visit the ruins of the palace of the legendary Queen of Sheba and the tombs of ancient Axumite kings and queens. It's worth visiting some of the local shops in Axum for exquisite locally made clothing and jewelry. Overnight  HOTEL

Day 3 – Fly to Lalibela and sightseeing
After breakfast you will be taken to the airport for your flight to Lalibela, famous for its rock-hewn churches dating back 800 years. This is the most important stop on the historical route and from the air the 11 churches, carved into the rugged mountainside, present an awesome spectacle. Afternoon excursion to the most spectacular churches. Overnight  HOTEL

Day 4 – Fly to Gondar and sightseeing.
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Gondar. In the afternoon a city tour of Gondar including a visit to the Royal Compound, where enchanting 17th century castles stand. Overnight  HOTEL  

Day 5 - Drive to Bahir Dar and visit Lake Tana
Visit Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile river. The afternoon is spent visiting isolated monasteries by boat. There is good birding in the lush forest surrounding much of the lake. With luck, you may see hippos swimming in the marsh. Overnight HOTEL

Day 6 – Visit Blue Nile Falls and Fly back to Addis Ababa
An early morning excursion to the thundering Blue Nile Falls. Along the walk to the falls, birding is excellent. Continue to the airport for your flight to Addis Ababa. Overnight HOTEL

Day 7- Departure

Day 3: Bahir Dar /Gorgora / Gondar. The day is dedicated to a boat trip on Lake Tana (the biggest lake of Ethiopia) to visit the monastery churches. There is good birding in the lush forests surrounding the lake.  With luck you may see hippos in the marsh. Drive to Gorgora and then on to Gondar. Overnight HOTEL

Day 4: Gondar: The day is dedicated to visit Gondar. The afternoon includes a city tour and a visit to the Royal compound, to visit 17th century statues.  Overnight HOTEL

Day 6:  Lalibela Flight from Gondar to Lalibela: visit the first groups of churches. Day 2: Addis - Mekelle
Early in the morning transfer to Bole International Airport and fly to Mekelle. Mekelle Town is the capital city for Tigrian Region. The town is pleasant to walk around.  Explore the castle of Emperor Yohanis and visit Hawalte, the museum built for the commemoration of those who sacrificed their lives during the struggle against the Revolutionary government. Overnight  HOTEL

Day 3: Mekelle - Dugem
Drive to Degum-visit Wukro Cherqos and Abreha wa Atsbeha.  Today we begin to explore the wonderful Tigray rock hewn churches starting from Abreha wa Atsbeha, situated 15 kms west of Wukro, the finest church in Tigre, it lies about halfway between Dugem and Wukro.  Afternoon visit Dugem Selassie Church. Overnight camping at Dugem or Overnight HOTEL in Wukro

Day 4: Explore around Dugem
Trek to Abuna Abraham Debre Tsion and Yohannes Maequdi. Trek to Abuna Abraham a couple of hours walk from Dugem, the Abune Abraham Debre Tsion church which is elaborately decorated with 16th century murals. The church's ceremonial fan dates back to the 15th century and consists of 34 parchment panels, each painted with a figure of a saint. Lunch in Dugem, Afternoon trek to Yohannes Maequddi, which is best known for its ancient and well-preserved paintings. Overnight camping at Dugem or over night hotel in Wukro.

Day 5: Dugem - Hawzen
Drive and trek to Mariam Korkor, a rock-hewn church situated on one of the highest mountains of Gheralta just overlooking the village of Megab, 8 kms south of Hawzien. An hour's trek from the village brings you to the Mariam Korkor and the nearby smaller church of Daniel Korkor. A picnic lunch after a steep climb up. Time to enjoy the wonderful view across the Gherelta Plains. In the afternoon a gentle return to camp. Visit local village, a local grinding mill or maybe join in coffee ceremony. Overnight at Gheralta Lodge or Hotel in Hawzien 

Day 6: Excursion around Gerallta lodge
Drive and Trek to Abune Yemata Abune Yemata is 4 kms drive from Megab and a further 30 minutes' walk will bring you to the foot of the perpendicular rock mountains of Guh. The scenery is breathtaking and the mountains resemble pillars reaching to the sky. The challenging and the only way to the church is footholds and handgrips in the rock face. Just before the entrance to the church there is a narrow ledge carved in the cliff from which one can view a sheer drop of approximately 250m to 300m. Picnic lunch at top, it worth and relaxing to ascend even if you can make to the church. afternoon at leisure or visit the village and overnight or proceed to Hawzien. Day 7: Drive back to Mekelle via Sinkata after breakfast  – About 30 minutes walk from Sinkata lies Adi Chewa and visit Arbuta Insesa. It is a large church with several unusual features, most notably the deepest domed ceiling in any Tigrian church, and strange red and yellow stencil-like figures on thick columns. We also explore Medhane Alem Adi Kasho, regarded as one of the oldest and most impressive churches in Tigre for its size and impressive architecture. The interior has a cathedral-like atmosphere. Moreover, you can visit Petros and Paulos and Mikael Melehayezenghi. Overnight  HOTEL

Day 8: Fly back to Addis  Transfer to airport for final departure.

 


11 DAYS TREKKING TOUR TO SIMIEN MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK (Addis Ababa, Gondar, camping tour)

Day 2: Fly to Gondar then drive Sankaber. Overnight camp in Sankaber
After breakfast transfer to airport to fly to Gondar, established by King Fasiladas in 1636. The town was capital of Ethiopia 17th century. Upon arrival at Gondar Airport, departure for Debark town (100 Kms from Gondar), where the head quarter of Semien Mountains National Park is found. Here we pay the entrance fees and a scout and a local guide will accompany us. Then we continue driving to Sankaber (31 Kms) the first campsite of the National Park. On this drive you will gain your first impression of the scale and beauty of this highland region, the extraordinary scenery, enjoying the endemic Gelada Baboons and the bone breaker giant bird Lammergeyer roaring around. Over night Camping at Sankaber. - (3200 m ASL)

Day 3: Sankaber to Geech Camp Site 5 – 6hrs
This day is the day that we arrange all the trekking staff including mules and Muleteers for packing and transport of camping gears and all foodstuffs for the trek. It is this day that we start trekking in the national park. We walk from Sankaber to Geech, which will take between 5 - 6 hours. After about 1 and half hours walk we see the Jinnbar River and falls, we will cross the river later in the day. After crossing the river, we ascend for about two hours to Geech, which is full of Giant Lobelias. The scenery is wonderful, and herd of the endemic Gelada Baboon can be seen on our way. Overnight Camping at Geech Campsite ( 3600m ASL )

Day 4: Geech – Imetegogo – Geech:
This day we will be waking to the best viewpoints in the National park. First we walk to Imetgogo, the view here enables one to look 360 to all directions this is one of the best views in the national park. After a short stay here continue walk to Seha, the other terrific viewpoint in the National park. We will have our picnic lunch and we continue to the last viewpoint, Quedadit. After some stay we walk back to Geech camp site. The walk this day is not hard; it takes about 4 - 5 hours. It is the day that we will be walking in the best part of the national park. If we are lucky we might have the chance to see mammals like the Simien wolf, Walia Ibex and Klipspringers. Overnight Camping at Geech Campsite ( 3600 ASL).

Day 5: Chenek. Overnight Camping:
We trek to Chenek.  We will be walking through the giant lobelia trees and under these trees African field rats are common. After a picnic lunch we walk on the edge of Elate escarpments (4000m. above sea level), which is another breathtaking view in the national park; finally we descend to Chenek. Chenek is the best place to see the endemic Walia Ibex and more Gelada Baboon. It takes 6-7 hours walk. Overnight  camping at Chenek.

Day 6: Chenek- Bwahit Ras- Ambiquo 8 hrs Trek
Today is the longest trekking day so far, taking up to about 10 hours. From Chenek at 3650 metres, the path to Ambiquo campsite crosses over the Bwahit Ras. Leaving Chenek we are faced with a two-hour ascent to the top of the pass at 4200 metres, where we enjoy views that open up to the east over Mesheha Valley to the Dashen mountain range. Looking back we find ourselves under the cover of the impressive rock formations of Imet Gogo. From Bwahit Ras the path leads steeply down and across the Mesheha Valley. Here we notice an increase in temperature as we descend down to the Mesheha River at 2800 metres, before climbing slightly to reach Ambiquo campsite at an altitude of 3100 metres. Day 7: Ambiquo- Ras Dashen Summit – Ambiquo the longest day 8-9hrs trek to ascent
Today is a summit day involving a trek of 16 kilometers (ten to eleven hours)! So we leave from our campsite around 4: oo AM. The path winds its way over eight kilometers and ascends up 1400 metres to Ras Dashen. It begins by climbing steeply through barley fields and fallow land before clearing the vegetation zone and reaching mountain steppe, at around 3700 metres. From there it flattens out, as it traverses ridges in the shadow of Ras Dashen. Just below Dashen Pass at around 4250 metres, an impressive moraine can be seen. A moraine consists of material transported and deposited by a glacier. This moraine was formed 20,000 to 14,000 years ago in the last Ice Age, when the Simien Mountain tops had small ice caps. The final stretch to the summit involves an exciting climb and scramble up and over large boulders, before reaching the summit. From the top of Ras Dashen at an altitude of 4543 metres, we are sure to be mesmerized by the far ranging views that spans more than 10,000 square kilometers. To the west the steep faces of peaks in the national park are visible, whilst the Tekeze Valley is visible to the north and the east. Returning from the summit we retrace our steps along the same path back to our camp at Ambiquo. Overnight camping at Ambiquo.

Day 8: Arkwaziye Trek for 7-8 hrs
From Ambiquo the path takes us back down to the Mesheha River (2800 metres). Our destination tonight is Arkwaziye, which is situated at an altitude of 3600 metres and located on the northern reach of the Mesheha (Went) River. A great day to take in more incredible views of the Simien Mountains. This campsite is one of the most beautiful campsites in the national park. Overnight Arkwaziye campsite

Day 9: Trek Chenek for 5 hrs
A final trekking day in the sensational Simien Mountains. From Arkwaziye we return back to Chenek camp to overnight. We complete a loop by following the path until we reach its junction with the earlier main path at Bwahit Pass. Here we descend down to Chenek or take a detour and enjoy a summit circuit of Bwahit (4430m). The trekkers who summit Bwahit will be rewarded with spectacular views. The area surrounding Chenek is one of the best to see the Wallia ibex, one of Ethiopia's endemic species. It is actually a mountain goat that lives on the steep slopes and grassy ledges of the escarpment. It is one of the most endangered mammals in the world. Overnight Camping at Chenek.
Day 10: Drive to Gondar
This morning we drive along the dirt road that runs from Chenek to Sankaber, leave Simien Mountains National Park continue back to Debark (two to three hours). We stop at Debark local café to say goodbye to our companion and finalize all trekking formalities before continuing 100 kilometers back to Gondar, check into our hotel and enjoy a welcomed shower. The afternoon is at leisure to simply relax in the beautiful gardens of the hotel and absorb the view or head down into town for some optional sightseeing. Overnight  HOTEL

Day 03: Drive to Awash
Morning start drive 230km South of Addis Ababa in the rift valley past the town Debre Zeit,  Crater Lake and Adama/Nazaret town to visit Awash Park with its volcano landscapes and savannah grassland habitat for a variety of bird species.
Late afternoon we explore the Awash National park, which is home to mammals such as Oryx, Lesser Kudu, Hammadryas Baboon and Olive Baboon, Vervet Monkey, Salt'
s Dik-dik and more. Overnight  HOTEL  OR LODGE.

Day 04: Drive to Afdera
On the drive to Afdera, we view the Rift valley scenery and Afar people and their village. Have lunch at Samara, process our entrance permission and also from here are joined by two Police men and one road guide who accompany us to the Afar depression.  Continue to Afdera. Overnight camping at side of Lake Afdera or Local hotel.

Day 05: Drive to Kusrewad and Erta Ale.
Drive to Kusrewad where we hire camels to to serve as pack animals and transportation for those who wish to ride. Local militia and rock guide join our group. Late afternoon start walking to Erta A
le. Around 5 pm 3 hours trek climb to Erta Ale volcano and overnight on the top of the mountain. Erta Ale is 613 meters tall, with a lava lake, one of only five in the world, at the summit. It is notable for being the longest existing lava lake, present since the early years of the twentieth century. Overnight on the Summit.

Day 06: Drive to Hammed Ela
Around 9 am we will descend to the base of the volcanic mountain, where are cars are parked and our cook will have prepared breakfast.  We drive to Hammed Ela via Kusrewad. This day drive will be the most challenging drive of all the journey. If there is inhospitable weather, there are possibilities of bad road conditions. We should keep hydrated for the journey. Day 07: Dallol Salphur spring, Lake Assale Salt Bar and camel caravans.
Excursion to Dallol (116 meter below sea level, one of the lowest places in the world) colorful salts mining, visit Lake Assale, follow up camel
caravans and walk with the Afar and people from highland. We will see the traditional way of extracting salt bars, which were once used as local currency, and transported on the Camel. You'll see how they prepare their traditional bread, how they travel, communicate & more. It is another unique experience. Back to Hamed Ela. Overnight camping at Hammed Ela.

Day 08: Hammed Ela - Mekelle
Drive to Mekelle via the town of Berhale in the river bed.  Ascend all way to the Tigrian highland with the camel caravans and stop for photo over the depression. Overnight  HOTEL

Day 09: Fly to Addis Ababa
Morning transfer to the air port in Mekelle and fly back to Addis Ababa. Shopping and evening departure.

Day 2: Drive Arba Minch
a day drive to Arba Minch, the Southern Rift Lakes of Chamo and Abaya adjacent to Nechisar National Park. We stop at the Melka Kunture archeological site and Tiya heritage site to admire the crudely fashioned stone monoliths, that some believe to be ancient grave marks. We stop for lunch at Butajira local restaurant and then precede on the edge of the Rift valley the village of Guraghe, Kambata, Wolayita and if time allow we detour to Dorze peoples traditional weaving. Much important is Enset (false banana) plantation, used for Kocho (food), dominant multipurpose. In the evening enjoy the clear-blue stars of the African sky over fascinating Chamo and Abay Lake. Day 3: Excursion in Arba Minch
In the morning we drive across the barrier land, the so called 'BRIDGE OF GOD', which separate the Chamo and Abaya Lakes. In the park you will see the endemic Swayne Hartebeest, Burchellfs Zebras, Lesser and Greater Kudus, Grantfs and Thomsonfs Gazelles and amongst birds; Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Kori Bustard, Secretary bird and Lesser Kestrel. In the afternoon, boat trip to Lake Chamo to view the Crocodiles, Hippopotamus or we drive to Chencha a Dorze village to admire their cultural weaving and Bamboo and Enset-leaves made house style. Day 4: Drive to Jinka
Today we drive further south to the town of Jinka to visit the Konso villages, known for their traditional cluster house style, ritual sites, grave mark Totem known as Waka and traditional terrace farming. After short break at Weyto proceed to Key Afer, you will be able to join in the local weekly Banna and Tsamay market, same a very colourful market that attracts neighboring tribes in the region - the Ari from Jinka, the Tsamay from Weyto and the Hamars from Dimeka area and are known for their local made showy decorative dressings and bunting hair style as well as dye striped bodies. Attending to this market will allow you to compare the dressing patterns, ornamentation techniques etc. of the various tribes in the area. Afternoon, you will be proceeding to Jinka. Day 5: Excursion to Mursi Tribe village
We drive further south to visit the Mursi Village in Mago Park, and may spot wild games such as Gerenuk, Oribi, Kudu, Hartebeest, Water-buck and many bird species (180 species have been recorded in this Park so far).

The Mursi tribe whose women wear circular clay plate on their lower lip as well ear lobes the men are known for the fierce stick fighting. Afternoon visit Jinka townfs daily market and Ethnographic Museum that gives a good overview of the Omo Valley people culture and way of life. Overnight Jinka Resort/Orit hotel at Jinka.

Day 6: Drive to Turmi
Drives to Turmi en-route visiting Ari and Banna tribes arrive have lunch; fix our camp and rest till the sun get cool. Late afternoon walk to the villages of the Hammer people that enjoy body decoration and wear quantities of colorful beads and clay hair buns with Ostrich feathers spend pleasant after noon with friendly Hamar people walk back to the camp before dark. Day 7: excursion to omorate , Dansenach tribe village
Estimated Travel Time: 5 hours Approximate Distance: 114 km round trip today we take a day excursion to Omorate to visit the semi-nomadic pastoral Dassanech people at the bank of the Omo River. After breakfast we drive Arba Minch on the way you may dik-dik, and lesser kudu. We can also keep an eye out for lesser bustards, secretary birds, and ostriches. You will have a stop at Arbore. The Arbores are settled parallel to Lake Stephanie and at the Northern edge of Buska Mountain chain that extends 96Kms in the Weyto Plains of the Omo Valley. a day drive to Arba Minch, the Southern Rift Lakes of Chamo and Abaya adjacent to Nechisar National Park. We stop at the Melka Kunture archeological site and Tiya heritage site to admire the crudely fashioned stone monoliths, that some believe to be ancient grave marks. We stop for lunch at Butajira local restaurant and then precede on the edge of the Rift valley the village of Guraghe, Kambata, Wolayita and if time allow we detour to Dorze peoples traditional weaving. Much important is Enset (false banana) plantation, used for Kocho (food), dominant multipurpose. In the evening enjoy the clear-blue stars of the African sky over fascinating Chamo and Abay Lake. Day 04.Wednesday- Excursion in Arba Minch
In the morning we drive across the barrier land, the so called 'BRIDGE OF GOD', which separate the Chamo and Abaya Lakes. In the park you will see the endemic Swayne Hartebeest, Burchell Zebras, Lesser and Greater Kudus, Grant and Thomson Gazelles and amongst birds; Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Kori Bustard, Secretary bird and Lesser Kestrel. In the afternoon, boat trip to Lake Chamo to view the Crocodiles, Hippopotamus or we drive to Chencha a Dorze village to admire their cultural weaving and Bamboo and Enset-leaves made house style. Day 05.Thursday – Drive to Jinka via Key Afer Market
Today we drive further south to the town of Jinka to visit the Konso villages, known for their traditional cluster house style, ritual sites, grave mark Totem known as Waka and traditional terrace farming. After short break at Weyto proceed to Key Afer, you will be able to join in the local weekly Banna and Tsamay market, same a very colourful market that attracts neighboring tribes in the region - the Aris from Jinka, the Tsamay from Weyto and the Hamars from Dimeka areaand are known for their local made showy decorative dressings and bunting hair style as well as dye striped bodies. Attending to this market will allow you to compare the dressing patterns, ornamentation techniques etc. of the various tribes in the area. Afternoon, you will be proceeding to Jinka. Day 06. Friday – Excursion to Mursi village
We drive further south to visit the Mursi Village in Mago Park, and may spot wild games such as Gerenuk, Oribi, Kudu, Hartebeest, Water-buck and many bird species (180 species have been recorded in this Park so far). The Mursi tribe whose women wear circular clay plate on their lower lip as well ear lobes the men are known for the fierce stick fighting. Afternoon visit Jinka town's daily market and Ethnographic Museum that gives a good overview of the Omo Valley people culture and way of life. Overnight Hotel 

Day 07. Drive to Turmi via Dimeka Saturday Market
Today we drive through the fascinating uninterrupted lifestyle of Banna and Hamar communities. Driving further down into the Omo Valley, you will pass the Key Afer town and Proceed Turmi, on the way you will stop by at Dimeka to attend the Saturday market which attracts neighboring tribes from the area like Hammer, Karo and sometimes Dassanech, Further ahead, you will be driving to Turmi, homeland to the hospitable Hamar tribe. Day 08. Sunday- Excursion to Omorate
Estimated Travel Time: 5 hours Approximate Distance: 114 km round trip today we take a day excursion to Omorate to visit the semi-nomadic pastoral Dassanech people at the bank of the Omo River. Embark on an optional dug-out canoe ride across the Omo River to visit a Dassanech village on the other side Or to Karo tribe which set up their beautiful village at edge of Omo River, Karo people are known for their unique body painting. Day 09. Monday- Drive to Yabello Via Konso tribe Market
After breakfast we drive east to Yabello on the way, you will have a stop at Arbore, a small settlement to visit the village and also we attend the Monday market which most traveler skip to visit but it worth. The Arbore village set in between Hamar, Banna, Tsamay, Borena and Konso so in this market we will see the congregation of these tribes. The Arbores are settled parallel to Lake Stephanie and at the Northern edge of Buska Mountain chain that extends 96Kms in the Weyto Plains of the Omo Valley. Short break again at Weyto and proceed to Yabello. the colorful northern Kenyan style dressing of Borena women. Day 2: Fly to Gondar then drive Sankabar. Overnight camp in Sankabar
After breakfast transfer to airport to fly to Gondar, established by king Fasiladas in 1636. The town was capital of Ethiopia17thc. Upon arrival at Gondar Airport, departure for Debark town (100 Kms from Gondar), where the head quarter of Semien Mountains National Park is found. Here we pay the entrance fees and a scout and a local guide will accompany us. Then we continue driving to Sankabar (31 Kms) the first campsite of the National Park. On this drive you will gain your first impression of the scale and beauty of this highland region, the extraordinary scenery, enjoying the endemic Gelada Baboons and the bone breaker giant bird Lammergeyer roaring around. O/n Camping at Sankabar. - (3200 m)

Day 3: Sankabar to Geech Camp Site 5 – 6hrs
This day is the day that we arrange all the trekking staff including mules and Muleteers for packing and transport of camping gears and all foodstuffs for the trek. It is this day that we start trekking in the national park. We walk from Sankaber to Geech, which will take between 5 - 6 hours. After about 1 and half hours walk we see the Jinnbar River and falls, we will cross the river later in the day. After crossing the river, we ascend for about two hour to Geech, which is full of Giant Lobelias. The scenery is wonderful, and herd of the endemic Gelada Baboon can be seen on our way. Overnight Camping at Geech Campsite (3600m).

Day 4: Geech – Imetegogo – Geech:
This day we will be waking to the best viewpoints in the National park. First we walk to Imetgogo, the view here enables one to look 360 to all directions this is one of the best view in the national park. After a short stay here continue walk to Seha, the other terrific viewpoint in the National park. We will have our picnic lunch and we continue to the last viewpoint, Quedadit. After some stay we walk back to Geech camp site. The walk this day is not hard; it takes about 4 - 5 hours. It is the day that we will be walking in the best part of the national park. If we are lucky we might have the chance to see mammals like the Simien wolf, Walia Ibex and Klipspringers. Overnight  Camping at Geech Campsite - (3600m).

Day 5: Chenek. Overnight Camping:
We trek to Chenek, we will be walking through the Giant lobelia trees and under these trees, and African field Rats are common. After picnic lunch we walk on the edge of Elate escarpments (4000m. above sea level), which is another breathtaking view in the national park; finally we descend to Chenek. Chenek is the best place to see the endemic Walia Ibex and more Gelada Baboon. It takes 6-7 hours walk. Overnight Camping at Chenek. - (3600m)

Day 6: Around Chenek:
This morning after breakfast we start trek to the second peak in the national Park called Bwahit Ras, It takes about two-hour ascent to the top of the pass at 4200 metres, where we enjoy views that open up to the east over Mesheha Valley to the Dashen mountain range. Looking back we find ourselves under the cover of the impressive rock formations of Imet Gogo. From Bwahit Ras the path leads steeply down and across the Mesheha Valley.
The rest afternoon will be wandering around Chenek. This site of Chenek has good view and it is also the best spot to observe the Walia Ibex.

Day 7: Chenek - Gondar:
The vehicle can reach the campsite of Chenek, so they will drive directly from Chenek campsite via Debark to Gondar. Drive from Chenek to Gonder with stops in some picturesque points. Overnight Goha Hotel.

Day 8: Fly to Addis Ababa:
After breakfast fly from Gondar to Addis Ababa then check in to your hotel. Overnight at Hotel

10 DAYS BIRD WATCHING TOUR

 

  1. Arrive Addis Ababa, afternoon drive to Geferssa Reservoir. Here, we expect to see some of the endemic birds like the Wattle Ibis, Rouget's Rail, black-headed Sis- kin, Abyssinian Long claw, the white collared pigeon and Blue-winged Goose. The African-black Duck, Ortolan bunting, Red-breasted Wheatear, Three-banded plover; African Marsh Harrier and African Fish Eagle are one of the species that we do see this afternoon. Overnight in hotel.
  2. Day Early start for Debre-Libanos monastery about 110 km north of the capital via Sululta Plain, the Red-rumpled and Lesser-striped Swallows, Pectoral-patched Cist cola, Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, common Buzzard and Black winged Lapwing are some of the birds that would be seen along the road. Around the monastery we expect to see some of the endemic birds like the Black-headed Forest Oriole, Banded Barbet, the White-billed Starling, Abyssinian Woodpecker, Rappel's chat, the White-backed Black Tit and Abyssinian slaty Flycatcher. The Lammergeyers, Egyptian Vulture, Lanner Falcon, Verreaux's Eagle and the White-checked Turaco are seen at the escarpment. Late afternoon drive back to Addis. Overnight in hotel.
  3. Day Leave Addis Ababa for Awash National Park, this morning we stop at Chalalklaka wetland near Debre-Zeit. The White-backed Duck, Tufted Duck, little stint, Ruff, African Spoon bill, Yellow billed stork, Common and crowned cranes, White-winged Black Tern and others are expect to be seen. Then we will have a short stop at lake Hora for more birding. Lunch will be at Nazareth. After lunch proceeding to Awash, one of the best birding sites in Ethiopian Rift valley. Overnight in hotel.
  4. Day Full day birding in the Park, The Arabian Bustard, Kori Bustard, White bellied Bustard, Buff crested Bustard, the Rosy-patched Shrike, Swallow tailed Kite, Bristle Crowned Starling, different woodpeckers, Grey-headed and Sulpher breasted Bush Shrike, Gabar Goshawk, Shirk, Crested Francolin, Common Quail, Harlequin Quail, Palm Swift, Orange-bellied Parrot, Martial Eagle, different wood Doves, Yellow billed Hornbill, Crested Lark, Singing Bush Lark, Red wing Bush Lark, Somali Golden-breasted Bunting, Little Rock Thrush, Grey-headed Batis and Spotted Flycatcher are one of the important birds that we are planning to see for today.   5. Day Drive to Langano, before lunch we will have short stops at Koka Dam (Awash River Bridge) for more aquatic and woodland birds. Then, we continue to Lake Zeway where we stop for lunch and an afternoon birding. Lake Zeway is one of the important areas of the Ethiopian Lakes. The Black Heron, Lesser Jacana, African Pygmy Goose, Pink backed and White Pelicans, Crowned Crane, Black-headed Gull, Great-black headed Gull, Verreaux's Eagle Owl, Green Shank, Wood Sandpiper, common and African Snipe, Red breasted Wryneck, Masked Weavers, Beautiful Sunbird and some others would be seen. Overnight in hotel.
  6. Day Early birding around the Hotel garden and the cliff near the lake. Shallow's Wheatear, Red bill and Von de Deckins Horn bill, Diedderik Cuckoo, Slender-tailed Nightjar, woodland Kingfisher, striped Kingfisher, Little and Blue-breasted Bee-eater, the endemic Black winged Love bird, Red-headed Weaver, Fan tailed Raven, Hemp Rich's Hornbill, Brubru, Bearded Woodpecker, Bare faced Go away bird and Marico sunbird are one of the species we expect this morning. After breakfast we drive to the Abijata-Shalla lakes national park for more birding. The Saddle bill stork, Goliath Heron Golden Plover, Grassland pipit, lesser and Greater Flamingos, and hundreds of other water birds could be easily seen. Overnight in hotel.
  7. Day Full day birding in the forest of Wondo Genet, it is the site for some the endemic birds like the Yellow-fronted Parrot, Thick-billed Raven, the Abyssinian Wood pecker and Banded Barbet. Chenek is the best place to see the endemic Walia Ibex and more Gelada Baboon. It takes 6-7 hours walk. Over night Camping at Chenek.

 



Day 6: Chenek- Bwahit Ras- Ambiquo 8 hrs Trek
Today is the longest trekking day so far, taking up to about 10 hours. From Chenek at 3650 metres, the path to Ambiquo campsite crosses over the Bwahit Ras. Leaving Chenek we are faced with a two-hour ascent to the top of the pass at 4200 metres, where we enjoy views that open up to the east over Mesheha Valley to the Dashen mountain range. Looking back we find ourselves under the cover of the impressive rock formations of Imet Gogo. From Bwahit Ras the path leads steeply down and across the Mesheha Valley. Here we notice an increase in temperature as we descend down to the Mesheha River at 2800 metres, before climbing slightly to reach Ambiquo campsite at an altitude of 3100 metres. Overnight camping at Ambiquo.

Day 7: Ambiquo- Ras Dashen Summit – Ambiquo the longest day 8-9 hrs trek to ascent
Today is a summit day involving a trek of 16 kilometers (ten to eleven hours)! So we leave from our campsite around 4: ooAM morning the path winds its way over eight kilometers and ascends up 1400 metres to Ras Dashen. It begins by climbing steeply through barley fields and fallow land before clearing the vegetation zone and reaching mountain steppe, at around 3700 metres. From there it flattens out, as it traverses ridges in the shadow of Ras Dashen. Just below Dashen Pass at around 4250 metres, an impressive moraine can be seen. A moraine consists of material transported by a glacier and before being deposited. This moraine was formed 20,000 to 14,000 years ago in the last Ice Age, when the Simien Mountain tops had small ice caps. The final stretch to the summit involves an exciting climb and scramble up and over large boulders, before reaching the summit. From the top of Ras Dashen at an altitude of 4543 metres, we are sure to be mesmerized by the far ranging views which spans more than 10,000 square kilometers. To the west the steep faces of peaks in the national park are visible, whilst the Tekeze Valley is visible to the north and the east. Returning from the summit we retrace our steps along the same path back to our camp at Ambiquo. Overnight camping at Ambiquo.

 

 

 

Day 8: Arkwaziye Trek for 7-8 hrs

 

From Ambiquo the path takes us back down to the Mesheha River (2800 metres). Our destination tonight is Arkwaziye, which is situated at an altitude of 3600 metres and located on the northern reach of the Mesheha (Went) River. A great day to take in more incredible views of the Simien Mountains this campsite is one of the most beautiful located campsites in the national park. Overnight Arkwaziye campsite

 

Day 9: Arkwaziye to Lamo
We have to leave the higher plateau and village of Arkwaziye (11800ft. /3600m), cross several substantial ridges and valleys, and then climb down the near vertical Devil's staircase with a 3000ft. /900m. Descent. There ward for this effort is Lamo, one of the most beautiful
Locations in the Simians. Our overall height loss will be around 5200ft/1600m. Alt at Lamo approx 2000m. Trek time 10 hours. Over night at Lamo campsite

 

 

 


Day 10: Mekarebia to Mulit
We set from our campsite for Mekarebia. Look north-east across the valley to the circle of mountains around AmbaTon and you will see the view illustrated on Ethiopian Airlines tickets. Today you should allow around eight hours for a day of ridge and valley treks through some spectacularly beautiful scenery to Mulit, where we camp at much the same altitude as Lamo. Trekking time about8 hours. Altitude undulating approx 1900m. Over night at Mulit campsite

Day 11: Mulet to Adi Arkay – Gondar
Walk down to the market town of Adi Arkay. From Hawaza located at around 6500ft/2000m. With wonderful views to Amba Ton and the high escarpments of the Simiens Plateau, walk to Adi Arkay 1600m. Trekking time approx 2/3 hours. Altitude dropping to Adi Arkay1600m from 1900m. After a celebratory drink in a cafe, say goodbye to your muleteers and camp staff, and meet the vehicles for the five hour drive to Gondar again we stop at Debark to say Goodbye to our park guide and Scout, proceed to Gondar for welcome showers, dinner and overnight at the Goha Hotel. Day 12: Fly Gondar-Addis – Fly back home
Morning transfer to Gondar airport flies Addis. Afternoon will be at leisure evening transfer to Bole international airport fly back home.

15 DAYS BIRD WATCHING TOUR

 

  1. Arrive Addis Ababa, transfer to the hotel.
  2. Day excursion to Debre Libanos monastery, through the Sululta plain to Debre Libanos and the Jima River Gorge, about 110 km from the capital. Sululta plain is a wide shallow valley, ringed by mountains, with many rivers draining into it and forming extensive wetlands for much of the year. En route through the plain we can expect to see Black-winged and Spot-breasted Plover, Wattled Ibis, Blue-winged Goose, Rouget's Rail, Abyssinian Long claw, Abyssinian Catbird, Common Crane and Wheat Ear. It is currently the only known location in Ethiopia for the exceptionally rare White-winged Flufftail. We will make a small detour from the main road to take in the very attractive 200 m Aleltu Falls, where we can expect to see White-billed Starling, Ruppel's Chat, Bearded Vulture, Verreaux's Eagle, Lanner and Peregrine Falcon. Overnight in hotel.
  3. Drive in the morning to the Ambo Road for Menagesha State Forest, about 50 km from Addis Ababa. The Emperor Zera Yacob (1434-1468), noticing the degradation of the forest around Mount Wechecha, initiated what was perhaps the first reforestation and conservation measure in the region by having Juniper trees planted. We will take a picnic lunch, making our way up through the forest towards the top of Mount Wechecha. We can expect to see the Abyssinian Catbird, Banded Barbet, Golden-backed Woodpecker, Black-headed Forest Oriole, Wattled Ibis, Yellow-fronted Parrot, Black-winged Lovebird, Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Crowned Eagle and Narina's Trogan. Among the wildlife species recorded here are: Menelik's Bushbuck, Leopard, Colobus Monkey, Serval, Grey Duiker, Hyaena, Warthog, Porcupine and Civet Cat. We will return to Addis by the Jima Road, to the south of the forest. Overnight hotel.
  4. Drive to the Ethiopian Rift Valley, turning east at Mojo towards Awash. We will be birding along the way, and will stop for lunch in Nazareth. For the rest of this day's activities and for the species we can expect to see, Over 460 species of bird have been recorded in this area including: the Abyssinian Roller, Abyssinian Ground Horn Bill, the endemic White-tailed Swallow, Buff Crested Bustard, Dark Chanting Goshawk, Pygmy Falcon, Honey Guide, Woodland Kingfisher, Kori and Arabian Bustard, Black-shouldered Kite, White and Crowned Rosy Patch Shrike, Carmine Bee Eater, Orange-billed Parrot, Lilac Breasted Roller, Lappet faced and Ruppell's vulture. We will also see a variety of different animals, including Greater and Lesser Kudu, Wart Hog, Dik Dik, Gerenuk, Menelik's Bushbuck, Soemmering gazelle, Hamadryas baboons, and crocodiles. Overnight in hotel.
  5. The day is dedicated birding in the different habitats of the area, the plains, cliffs, wetlands and riverine forest by the Awash. We can return to the camp for lunch. Camel trekking can be arranged to some of these sites - one gets a great view from on top of a camel, and can also get closer to birds and wildlife. Overnight in hotel.
  6. Today we retrace our steps towards Mojo, birding along the way, and stopping to see the hippo in the pools near Nazret. Than drive to Zeway lakeshore where huge numbers of water birds are congregated. African Pygmy Geese, Yellow-billed and Marabou Storks, Collared Pratincoles, Lesser and Greater Jacanas, African Jacanas, White Pelicans, Fish Eagles, Crowned and Common Cranes are some of the species to be seen here in impressive numbers. Than we will drive to lake Langano Overnight in hotel.
  7. Lake Langano is one of Ethiopian salty and suitable for relaxing and also where some one can swim. The day is dedicated to visit the Shalla and Abiyata National Park, where we can see different birds including flamingos. Overnight in Hotel.
  8. Drive Lake Langano to Wondo Genet hot set among forested hills. Here we will see the Silvery-cheeked Hornbill, White-cheeked Turaco, and Yellow-fronted Parrot. In the evening we will explore the juniper forests behind the hotel, where we can see the Black-headed Forest Oriole, the Golden-backed Woodpecker, Redwing Starling, Grosbeak Weaver, Mountain Wagtail and Black-roughing Swallow. We will also see Colobus monkey, Anubis baboon and bushbuck. Overnight in hotel.
  9. The day is dedicated to walk in the forests around Wondo Genet, for more birds and if someone wants to stay relaxing in the hot spring swimming pool this is a really ideal place for a day relaxing. Overnight in hotel.
  10. Drive Wondo Genet to Awassa birding along the shores of Lake Awassa. In composition this fresh water Lake is different from the alkaline lakes of Abiyata and Shalla. The Black forest near the lake is an additional and interesting birding site. Overnight in hotel.
  11. Early morning visit the fish Market in the lakeshore of Awassa, than drive to the Bale Mountain National Parks. Overnight in hotel.
  12. The day is dedicated birding in the stunning Afro-Alpine setting of the Sanetti plateau, with its striking Afro-Alpine flora, such as the Giant Lobelia and Red Hot Poker. It is the best place in Ethiopia to see the Simien Wolf, the rare caned in the world, while the huge rodent population, including the endemic Giant Mole Rat, supports a variety of raptors. The rare Wattled Crane is often seen, while there are a good number of the Spot-breasted Plover. Tullu Dimtu at 4377 m is the second highest mountain in Ethiopia and we can drive all the way to the top. Overnight in Hotel.
  13. The day is dedicated birding in Harena forest where at the southern boundary of the park the altitude is 1700 m. The Forest supports a woodland avi-fauna including the African Cuckoo Hawk, Yellow-fronted Parrot and Brown-backed Honey guide. Wildlife includes Klipspringer, Serval, Bushpig, Giant Forest Hog, Grey Duiker, Colobus Monkey, Lion and Leopard; although visitors are less likely to see the latter two and afternoon drive to Goba. Overnight in hotel.

You will be around late afternoon at Hamdela campsite where you will be staying camping for two nights. On the way you will also admire some local Tigre and Afar tribes’ village and camel caravan carrying the salt bars to transport it to the nearest local town.

 Day. 03: Hamed Ela – Dodome - Erta Ale

 

 In the morning, drive to Dodome. Here we will arrange camels to transport your luggage and water, and then you will start hiking to the Erta Ale Volcanic hills (613 meters above sea level) which is 15km one way, and walk to see the volcanic eruption. The eruption is so colorful and spectacular. At night, we will camp nearby the eruption, on the crater rim above the active lava lake.O/N Camping at ERTALE

 

 Day. 04: More excursions in Dodom and drive back to Hamadela

 

Climbing again early in the morning to the rim to see the sun set, then drive to Hamedela. Late after noon visit camel caravan.

 Day. 05: Excursion to Daloll depression drive back to MekeleAfter early breakfast drive to the Lake Asale, salty Lake and visit the salt workers and the merchant, then head to Dallol/Denakil Depression, which straddles the Eritrean border to the east of the Tigrian Highlands and is officially listed as the hottest and active place on the earth surface with an average temperature of 40 - 50 degrees Celsius. Most of this vast and unpopulated region lies below sea level at 116 Meters. Then drive back to Mekelle. O/N Hotel

Early morning fly to Bahir dar after short break leave out for boat trip on Lake Tana and visit two or three of its beautiful and interesting islands with their medieval period monasteries. Covering over 3500sq km, Lake Tana is Ethiopia’s largest lake and is famous as the home of the monasteries established on some 20 of its 37 islands. Most churches in the monasteries have interesting paintings and contain a collection of church treasures and beautiful old manuscripts back to the hotel for lunch and short break.

 

 In afternoon drive to Tis Isat (smoking of Fire) waterfall, Previous it was one of the most spectacular falls in Africa, 400m wide when in flood and dropping over a sheer chasm more than 45m deep, the thunderous noise could be heard long before arrival and the spray that is thrown up could be felt up to a kilo meters away. But since a dam has been built upstream, the waterfall is reduced and has lost some of its former splendor but specially now in the rain time, it is still impressive. And also the walk to the waterfall is nice and you can enjoy nature and watch birds. Keep an eye out for parrots, bee-eaters, lovebirds and turacos. O/N HOTEL  

 

Day. 03: (Jan. 03) Drive to Gondar and sight seeing 

 

Morning after drive to Gondar through the beautiful and fertile countryside on the Lake Tana side on new and Check in hotel.

 

PM our visiting the city will begin from Fasiladas Gibi, there are a dozen castles built by various emperors over the course of 236 years. The city seems more European than African and also has Islamic influences. We will visit Fasiladas' Palace that is probably the most impressive of all the castles found in the area and the oldest one, too! We continue on to the bath of Fasiladas. Then we continue to visit the Church Of Debre Berhan Selassie (Light of the Trinity). The interior of this is decorated with beautiful frescos, cherubs and paintings. Debre Berhan Selassie is rumoured to once have been the proposed final resting place of the Ark of the Covenant. O/N iHOTEL  

 

 

 

Day. 04: (Jan. 04) Drive - Gondar / Simien Mountains National park

 

Today we drive to the jagged panorama of the Simien Mountains National Park, famed for its exclusive landscape, afro-alpine vegetation, and unique wildlife, where you may spot the endemic Wallia Ibex, Gelada Baboon troops, Bushbuck, Klipspringer. However, as we stay for one night we will enjoy the dramatic scenery and a troop friendly Gelada Baboon at very close distance and Birds such as Chestnut-napped Francolin, Mountain Thrush, Thick-billed Raven, Lammergeyer, White-collared Pigeon and Ankober Serin just to name a few. Arrive to the lodge check in, have lunch, after short rest, for those who interest in hike/Trek we will trek for about 2-3 hrs on the edge and beautiful escarpment to view the beautiful and green valley, wondering the long day eating and grooming of Gelada Baboon families and then trace back to the Lodge

Drive to Chenek and trek see Wallia a unique species indigenous to Ethiopia and the Simien Mountains. Return to Gondar.

Morning after breakfast drive to Lalibela through Worita and also visit Awramba Community.

Among churches of this group Bete Medahine Alem (house of the redeemer) is the largest with 5 aisles, 72 pillars, vaulted dome and molding decoration. In the morning excursion to Yemerhane Kirstos cave church out side of Lalibela through beautiful mountainous land scape of last region. Back to the hotel for lunch and after noon visit the second group of the rock-hewn churches; Bete Emanuel (house of Emanuel) is architecturally the finest. Bete Giorgis (the house of George) is the finest of all the churches in Lalibela for which reason art historians conclude that this church is carved at the end of the cluster, after the masons have developed their skill to carve the church in such extraordinary perfection. Day. 09: (Jan. 09) Fly Lalibela – Axum

 

A flight further north takes you to the oldest city in Ethiopia, Axum. Eight Km drive to the Town check in hotel. This afternoon explore the city. Visit the interesting museum in stelae field, the impressive Stelae Fields and also the grounds of the 16th-century Cathedral of St. Mary of Zion, home of the original Ark of the Covenant, Queen of Sheba ruin palace and Tomb of Kaleb and Gebre Meskel at certain place will be dropped for souvenir and stretching your legs to the hotel. Day 06  ( Jan. 18 )  Drive to GonDar  visit the castles, Fassilada’s bath& Debre Birhan Selassie Church

 

Early in the morning after breakfast drive to Gondar  and in the after noon visit the Royal Enclosure that is surrounded by high stone walls containing the ruins of 17th century palaces of king Fasiladas, king Lyasu and queen Mentewab and different other buildings. The castles are a mixture of Ethiopian, European and probably also Indian styles. According to descriptions of 17th century travelers, the interior of the castle of king Fasiladas was extremely luxurious, decorated with gold, ivory and precious stones. 

 

And also  visit Debre Berhan Selassie Church meaning Trinity at the Mount of Light. It has rectangular structure and ceilings are decorated with beautiful winged angels, and its walls with impressive scenes depicting biblical events, including the life of Christ, Mary, and the saints and martyrs. Lastly you can also visit Waleka village which used to be the Ethiopian Jewish village Late after noon visit the first day of Timket ceremony people walking to the Fasil bath with Arc of convent.
